Where do abusive priests go?

July 15, 2009

It’s hard for me to wrap my head around this subject, but this 2009 experience with Jesuits made me wonder where abusive priests end up when the case is closed.  My strong impression is diocesan priests are usually cut loose, on their own, but I don’t know for sure.  Sometimes it’s in the news, and the news only covers diocesan priests.

Where do religious order priests and nuns go?  I mean, they weren’t lined up for a firing squad (though they might think so).

What next?  Where do they wake up in the morning, this day, this year, and next year?   What do they do in their day?  What fills the time now?   How do they manage?  What have they been doing for the last six or seven years?  Did they creep back into teaching and ministry, like the Jesuit who abused me did?   Or did their supervisors keep promises?

I just wondered about this because I am getting the silent treatment from Jesuits — even though Fr. Nicolas told me he asked the Missouri province to address it!   Is the perp getting the silent treatment too — or are they spending this time on him?

Okay, this is as much as I can handle.  He is not my responsibility.  I just wondered.
